Gateway Community Action Partnership operates the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) in Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties. The program provides supplemental foods, nutrition education, lactation support, immunization education and health care referrals to income-eligible pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to age 5. Gateway WIC serves more than 21,000 clients annually through flexible hours through its ten (10) offices. Gateway Community Action Partnership’s Literacy Services Department will conduct two online Literacy Volunteers tutor training sessions in 2022. Pre-registration is required. Trained tutors will work one-on-one with adult learners who need help reading, writing, or speaking English. The training courses will be held online Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning January 20 and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning March 16. Each course is held once a week for five weeks.

Gateway Community Action Partnership’s Early Head Start/Head Start program announced today a new partnership with the national nonprofit DonorsChoose to help teachers tap into a network of 4 million donors to support classroom projects and more seamlessly align with district strategy and operations. Teachers in Gateway EHS/Head Start have raised $100K and completed over 190 projects on DonorsChoose. In an effort to expand participation in NJ SNAP, Hunger Free NJ is circulating a survey to learn more about the barriers to enrollment. We will be publishing the results in a report that will include actionable steps the state can take to improve SNAP participation, which currently reaches just 75 percent of very low-income residents who would likely qualify.

Gateway Community Action Partnership offices and sites will reopen on Monday, June 15 and resume normal daily hours of operation, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Agency services will be available at agency sites throughout the coverage area. Client intake for program services will be limited to comply with safe social distancing protocols and all employees, clients, guests, etc. will be required to wear a protective face mask inside agency facilities at all times. Please note: the WIC program will continue to provide phone certifications and will not be serving clients in person, until further notice. Gateway Community Action Partnership’s College Tour 2020 scheduled for April 13-19 has been cancelled in response to the safety concerns regarding COVID-19. Refunds will be provided by mail to students who signed up for the trip. The U.S. Census Bureau will host a recruiting event on Wednesday, March 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Salem County One-Stop Career Center, 174 E. Broadway, Salem. The Census Bureau is hiring for field representatives and census takers. A Census representative will be available to answer questions about positions with the 2020 Census and assist with the on-line application. Pay rates start at $16.50 per hour.
